Peter Hammerschlag

Peter Hammerschlag was an Austrian writer and artist of Jewish descent, whose diverse talents spanned literature, poetry, acting, and graphic art. As a surrealist poet and Kabarett artist, he made significant contributions to the Austrian arts scene, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to influence the country's cultural landscape. His cabarets, in particular, remain a notable aspect of his oeuvre, with his innovative approach earning him recognition and accolades.

Despite his promising career, Hammerschlag's life was tragically cut short during World War II. In 1941, he was granted an exit permit to emigrate to Argentina, but was unable to secure a passport, ultimately leading to his internment in a forced labour camp. The following year, he was brutally murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Today, Hammerschlag's work is remembered and celebrated, with exhibits at the Jewish Museum of the City of Vienna showcasing his artistic talents. In 2007, he was posthumously honoured with a place on the Walk of Fame of Cabaret, a testament to his enduring impact on Austrian arts and culture.
