Johanan Luria
Johanan Luria was a prominent Alsatian Talmudist who lived during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. His residences included Niedernheim and Strasburg, where he spent significant periods of his life. Luria's education was rooted in traditional German yeshivot, where he spent many years studying before returning to Alsace. Upon his return, he established himself in Strasburg, obtaining government permission to found a yeshiva, which became a center of Jewish learning.
Luria's literary contributions to Judaism are notable, particularly his ethical work "Hadrakah" and the commentary "Meshibat Nefesh". The latter is an aggadic and mystical interpretation of the Pentateuch, built upon the foundations laid by Rashi. A key aspect of "Meshibat Nefesh" is its appendix, in which Luria presents a systematic refutation of Christian arguments against Judaism, demonstrating his engagement with the theological debates of his time. Through his writings and educational endeavors, Luria left a lasting impact on Jewish scholarship and thought.
