Elye Gordon

Elye Gordon was a prominent Soviet Yiddish author, born as Ilya Zinovyevich Gordon in the Jewish agricultural colony of Zelenopol, situated between Yekaterinoslav and Mariupol in Russia. His early life took a different turn, however, as he was raised in an orphanage in Berdyansk. Gordon pursued higher education at the Yiddish language departments of reputable institutions, including the Odessa Pedagogical Institute and later the Moscow Pedagogical Institute.

Gordon's life was marked by significant experiences, including his voluntary service in the Red Army during World War II. For his bravery, he was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner not once, but twice. The impact of the war was profound, and it later influenced his literary work, with wartime themes featuring prominently in his writing.
