Herbert Gold
American novelist (1924–2023)
Herbert Gold was a prominent American literary figure, born in 1924. He pursued higher education at Columbia University in New York City, where he laid the foundation for his future writing career. Gold's life took a brief detour when he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, an experience that likely influenced his subsequent work. Following the war, he relocated to San Francisco, California, a city known for its vibrant literary scene.
Despite being based in San Francisco, Gold did not identify with the Beat Generation, a movement that defined the city's literary landscape during that era. Instead, he carved out his own path, producing a substantial body of work that spanned multiple genres, including novels, essays, short stories, and poetry. Over the course of his long and prolific career, Gold authored an impressive 29 novels and works, leaving behind a lasting legacy in American literature. He passed away in 2023, at the age of 99.
