Herb Gray

7th deputy prime minister of Canada

Herbert Eser Gray was a notable Canadian politician and lawyer who left an indelible mark on the country's federal landscape. With a parliamentary career spanning four decades, from 1962 to 2002, Gray represented the Windsor area as a Liberal member of parliament, earning a distinction as one of the longest-serving members in Canadian history. His dedication and commitment to public service led to various cabinet positions under the leadership of three different prime ministers.

Gray's accomplishments extend beyond his longevity in office, as he made history by becoming Canada's first Jewish federal cabinet minister. His contributions to Canadian politics were further recognized when he was appointed as the seventh deputy prime minister, a position he held from 1997 to 2002. In addition to his deputy prime minister role, Gray was also granted the honorific The Right Honourable, a rare distinction bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to the country, and not solely by virtue of holding a specific position.
